Archives For Fund Raising

Currently

With less than 30 days to my first triathlon and just 3 days to a half marathon, I am on a reasonably good path of my journey.
Currently I am pretty much sorted in terms of equipment with a borrowed bike and the opportunity to hire a wetsuit.
In 3 days time on the 9th October 2011 I will run a half marathon (called the  OUTsurance 94.5Kfm Gun Run). This will be the first major test for me; success here will set me up with good motivation to complete a full marathon in the near future.

Training

Training is getting better – just as well because the Gun Run half Marathon is in a week and that is my first major goal. I went out for a cycle and a run (18km and 6km respectively) fairly good times (42 mins and 33 mins) considering. 4:18:4 should then be achievable at 10 mins, 40 mins and 20 mins – 1 hr 10 mins That will be my goal.

FundRaising

FundRaising has taken it’s first step. I have secured R350 ($43) to rent a wetsuit, and sold a watch I won in a competition for R2000 ($247) opening up the choice to either buy a trisuit or see if I can raise the further R5000 ($617) to get a Trek 1.1 with shoes, pedals, bike computer and helmet (albeit the cheapest ones). I should really focus on getting a bike because the one I have borrowed is a size too small for me and already giving me shoulder grief. Either way I am all set for Challenge Cape Town 4:18:4 and 11 Global, and have the chance to save for the Full IronMan next year.

If you would like to monitor my training, I keep pretty much up to date on RunKeeper and Fitocracy.

Training

Swimming and Cycling is going fantastic, at the moment I could do these legs of a half IronMan without worry. I tried out an Xterra Wetsuit a few days ago – a Vortex 4 – it was fantastic, if I had the money I would buy it right now. The same day I tried out the wetsuit I cycled a about 60kms, the route had a lot of hills in and the most fantastic views.

As for Running, I am still trying to ease back in after picking up a mysterious calf strain. My run today of 6kms seemed to be ok, but I need to be ready for my GunRun Half Marathon in 12 days time, hmmm. I will certainly be able to do the 4:18:4 4km run leg in 38 days time.

FundRaising

If you would like to contribute towards my mission to complete a full Ironman, feel free to donate as much as you want. Currently I have all I need through hire and borrow options. There are of course other financial commitments that are needed in training and registration for an Ironman. And to be perfectly honest I really would like to have my own bike that is the correct size and my own wetsuit.

Training

Training is going ok, not the greatest because of a combination of flu and calf strains. I keep the effort going at moderate heart rates. My first goal is the Gun Run half Marathon, that’s 20 days time. So I will just be cycling and swimming and gyming for the rest of the week. Oh and bootcamp.

FundRaising

FundRaising is the biggest disappointment ever, it is not like I am asking to have my wish list financed, it’s just $100 or so. Pretty sure that there are at least 10 people out there in the world who would like to be a part of this journey or just to help me along.
One good thing is that I have two bikes I can borrow – one too small and the other maybe just right (will find out tonight). And four wetsuits from two friends that I can use for the 400m swim, one of them has to be right. Failing that I can hire a wetsuit for 2 weeks for R350 ($46) from Xterra Wetsuits SA.
hmmm, but add a helmet, cycling shoes and a tri-suit to that and my wife will beat over the head with the shoes.

It is less than 60 days for my first Triathlon – a sprint: Challenge Cape Town 4:18:4. It is a 400m Swim in the ocean, 18 km cycle and a 4km run.

The distances are not a problem, even an olympic distance triathlon does not daunt me too much (ok the idea of swimming in the open water is a bit worrying; Sharks).

What really troubles me are the costs; it’s like your first Triathlon is really a Quadathlon with the fourth leg being finance.

I need a wetsuit; it is compulsory in these waters where the temperature is about 14 degrees Celsius. And there are wetsuits and there are Wetsuits. Obviously I don’t need the best, but I do need something suitable, something in the region of $300 – $400, at least that is what I thought until I saw the Blue Seventy Sprint that looks to be just $100.

Contribution

This is what I am asking for, just $100. There are of course other things – like a bike and all that goes with it, tri-suit, etc. But I can borrow those.

If you would like to help me to participate in my first Triathlon then please feel free to make a donation through PayPal; be it $10 or even the whole $100.

Do this and I will also be able to take part in longer distance Triathlons and even the Challenge Cape Town Ironman 2012, imagine that.
