At the beginning of the year I had to make a hard decision to abort my 2013 Ironman attempt; partly due to injury but mainly because it was just too expensive. But then the unbelievable happened; I won an entry to participate in the 2013 Spec Savers IronMan. Wow. Granted, I needed to have a chat with family and decide if I could realistically pull this off, after all it was just two month till Ironman and I had not been putting in the required hours. In the end I went for it! Continue Reading…
Archives For Triathlon
There is exactly 2 months left for the big Jailbreak, that is 61 days. Sixty One Days to one big escape attempt that will set me up for a very good chance to complete the Ironman next year.
Last year I completed my first ever triathlon at Jailbreak. Back then it was a
1.1km swim, a 44km cycle and an 11km run
with a target time of 2hrs 50mins, I completed Jailbreak in a time of 3 hours with only the swim letting me down with an extra 10 mins (must have been a bad transition). It was always my intention to take part in the Escape from Maximum Security, but now Jailbreak is offering an option called Life Sentence which is in essence a three quarter ironman:
3.3km swim 133km cycle 33km run
which I believe I can do in less than 7.5 hrs (80min swim, 3hr15min cycle and 2hr45min run). The this is not too much of an issue; I have taken part in event that took me almost as long, neither is the cycle and run distance.
The thing that scares me is the swim. Not having a wetsuit to properly train in the open water is a huge stumbling block, added to that I have not been very motivated to keep training in the pool. Things will have to change. The wetsuit will have to be hired (nothing can be done about that unless I win a competition or something) and I will have to put in some effective laps in the gym pool.
This is going to be an awesome challenge, so follow all the detail here as I get ready for the big Jailbreak.
How awesome is that! My first Triathlon! In the somewhat remote location of Worcester – more specificity the Brandvlei Dam – JailBreak was hosted. There were 3 events on the day; Maximum, Minimum and Gang(team) escape. The minimum escape was the event that I took part in; it was a 1.1km swim a 44km cycle and a 11km run. Next year there is no doubt in my mind that I will compete in the maximum escape: 2.2km,88km,22km.
The event was well hosted, huge congrats to everyone who put the triathlon together – it must have been a lot of work.

We all do something for a reason right? Otherwise why do it. With fitness and training those motivators are always shifting. First it’s to loos weight, then to get fit and then to do some crazy triathlon – well that was me. I want to do a triathlon, scratch that – an Ironman – because I want to let myself and everyone else know that I have what it takes so notice me. What pushes you.

You Are an Ironman: How Six Weekend Warriors Chased Their Dream of Finishing the World’s Toughest Triathlon
This has already made for interesting read, but to be honest I would not want my wife to read it, especially not the introduction. It starts out quite motivating but then when it start leading to accounts of big and ultimate sacrifices I start to cringe. Yet I am very eager to read about people just like me training to complete an IronMan, just like me.
I am doing this, wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Swim 1.1km
Cycle 44km
Run 11km
If you think I am insane let me know
This is the story of Dick & Rick Hoyt, the most inspirational father and son team to race in an Ironman.
It is now official.
My first Triathlon will Be JailBreak – Escape from Minimum Security
- 1.1 Km Swim
- 44 km Cycle
- 11 km Run
The Swim will be in a dam, so it will be a much easier (mentally) hurdle than the sea. Although I will still need to hire or buy a wetsuit. So wish I could own my own that I could train when needed (and not in the monotonous 25m gym pool).
The 44km cycle, no problem.
The 11km run, no problem under normal circumstances. Current circumstances dictated by calf strain. This should be solved in less than 45 days.
Target Time: 20min + 90 mins + 60 mins = 2hrs 20mins
Will try simulate the race closer to the time.
Race on!
With Challenge Cape Town postponed until 2012 the plan to start there has had to change. Sooo, the first Triathlon will need to be Jailbreak – escape from minimum security. That will be:
- 1.1km swim
- 44km cycle
- 11km run
The distance is just over double that the 4:18:4 I originally intended, but I believe that I can make a good go at this.
Training is going well apart from running – with my calf continuing to give me grief – but with Jailbreak taking place in over a month and a half I will be ready.
As for Fund raising, if you want to contribute or be a part of my journey that option is still available and greatly needed. I am still trying to raise money for a wetsuit, a bit and possible a tri-suit and transition bag.
